Designing a curriculum to support end-of-life issues for firemen in Spain.
“Firemen Care”
Background
In Spain, the firemen services should handle situations related to end-of-life issues such as supporting victims, decision making processes, life-threatening events for themselves in their daily work. Most of the interventions belong to a primary level and brief in time, however this occurs under stress. We have detected a lack of formal training in this area. We have also recorded the recognition of this need through a number of single interviews to firemen.
Objectives
1) To understand the needs and resources of the firemen regarding end-of-life issues. 2) To develop an end-of-life training program for firemen in Spain.
Methods
The project is going to be developed in three phases: 1) Diagnosis of the needs and resources regarding end-of-life issues. We will use a qualitative research design using the focus group method. 2) Discourse and thematic analyses are going to be mixed with an analysis of the focus group recording, 3) Design of a training program plus a pilot phase.
Conclusion
Specific skills are going to be developed to improve key points such as: emotional self-regulation, team work abilities, decision making processes, and maybe even in their sensory and episodic memory. All this is in order to help firemen with their capacity for dealing with end-of-life issues.
